Sports counseling is a specialized field of work in which counselors are concerned with the wellbeing, mental function, and physical performance of athletes. There is particular emphasis on the mental component of athletic performance. Their primary job is to assist the sports psychologist with providing athletes with psychological assessments, psychotherapy treatments, and clinical counseling. They work with a sports psychologists to help athletes overcome psychological performance obstacles, such as anger, anxiety and even eating disorders. They don’t just work with elite and professional athletes, however. They also help regular people learn how to enjoy sports and learn to stick to an exercise program.
