Interior design is the art and science of understanding people’s behavior to create functional spaces within a building, while interior decorating is the furnishing a space with decorative elements to achieve a certain aesthetic. In short, interior designers may decorate. A professional interior designer must understand interior architecture and works closely with architects to design the interior space. In other words, decorators are  hands-off in the design process, whereas interior designer may design and decorate.
